| Description | A selective and differential culture medium designed for the isolation and characterization of Gram-negative bacteria, particularly members of the Enterobacteriaceae family. The formulation incorporates bile salts and crystal violet, which effectively suppress the growth of most Gram-positive organisms. Lactose is included as a fermentable carbohydrate, allowing differentiation based on lactose-fermenting ability, and organisms capable of lactose fermentation produce acid that leads to distinctive color changes in the medium, enabling rapid visual identification. |
