| Description: | Chloramphenicol is a bacteriostatic and non-potent antibiotic. It inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit and preventing the attachment of aminoacyl tRNA to the ribosome. Chloramphenicol also inhibits chloroplast and mitochondrial protein synthesis. It is active against a broad-spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and is commonly used for the selection/growth of transformed bacterial cells. |
